Course Title: Typography

Description:
This course introduces the graphic design student to the principles of typography by investigating letter forms as both an element of design and as a medium of communication. Concentration is on typeface identification, effective use of type to convey information, measuring systems, and application of typography to computer graphics.
Prerequisite:
(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Competencies:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Use the proper terminology when describing letterform parts, type styles, type classifications and typeface design.
- Apply history of typography and be able to identify key innovators in type design.
- Apply the formal, technical, and aesthetic characteristics of type to the creation of a variety of publishing applications.
- Apply basic design principles (space, size, scale, rhythm, balance, contrast, harmony, volume, order) to type to enhance meaning and legibility in a variety of publishing applications.
