Course Title:  Web Graphics

Credit Hours:   (3- 0) 3 Cr. Hrs.
Description:

This course introduces the student to the World Wide Web as a new communications media. The Web has made a global instant publishing media available to those who wish to participate. This course covers techniques for creating graphics, such as GIF, JPG, PNG, and animated GIFs, image maps, rollovers, backgrounds, icons and buttons for the Web. In addition, skills in design, optimization compression techniques, color theory and an understanding of multiple platform, operating systems and browser limitations are covered.

Prerequisite:

           (A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Competencies:

           Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Understand Internet basics such as browsers, HTML, web graphic formats, optimization and compression.
  • Understand how to utilize Photoshop skills for Web graphic development and extend those skills to include Image Ready.
  • Understand and use the basic functions of Web Graphics Software, such as Image Ready and Photoshop, with options to expand to other current software such as Image Styler, Fireworks or current software.
  • Understand the Web Environment, screen design, browser differences, cross platform differences.
  • Be able to use GIF, JPEG, PNG compression software. (Including interlaced, transparent and animated GIF's).
  • Know when to use which file type.
  • Be able to optimize graphics for download speed, set color depth, make dithering decisions, use browser safe colors.
  • Be able to identify hexadecimal colors, color-related HTML tags and create browser safe artwork.
  • Be able to create web artwork for background tiles, image maps and graphical rules, icons and buttons, images and simple Gif animations.
