Course Title: Publishing - InDesign
Credit Hours: (3- 0) 3 Cr. Hrs.
Description:
This course introduces students to the field of publishing design using Adobe InDesign. Emphasis is on learning the software and on applying basic design skills to computer generated design. Students will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of page-layout, typography, working with color and color separations, and preparing documents for printing. Students are expected to have some computer experience and be familiar with basic functions of the computer before beginning the class.
Prerequisite:
(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)
- Computer experience highly recommended.
Competencies:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Use the basic functions of the computer and be familiar with the policies and procedures used in the computer labs: how to format disks, proper start-up and shut-down procedures, how to multitask, how to use the file server, how to select and use the laser and ink jet printers, and practice good file maintenance procedures.
- Use the basic functions of the software: how to set up pages, add/delete pages, set page sizes, how to start a new project, how to import text, how to format and edit text, how to size and crop images, how to work with master pages and style sheets, how to work with color and create separations, how to create camera-ready layouts.
- Apply the basic principles of design and typography.
- Identify the common applications of page design and explain the role of the graphic designer in the publishing industry.
